5 small changes for a happier life

Did you know that happiness is more achievable than you think?

We are constantly looking for the next best thing. The next product, dress, holiday, career. When do we actually stop to make the changes that counts? I know I’m guilty of filling the void with things. We just end up with so many things we don’t even know where to put them anymore. The amount of stuff we buy adds to our stress, and hence our unhappiness. We think we will be happier with each purchase, but in contradiction we are causing more chaos for ourselves!

Its important to take a step back and look internally. All yourself, what matters most to me? I guarantee you, it won’t be materialistic.


    1.  De-clutter!

That lamp you never use? Get rid of it! That dress you wore once? Donate it! For every one thing you bring into your life, get rid of two. Don’t keep accumulating things, you’ll have no room for yourself. Start the process with 3 boxes. A box to keep, a box to donate, and a box to throw out. Be ruthless, try not to justify every little thing you own. I know I’ve picked up clothing that hasn’t seen the light of day in years and somehow justified to myself that it will complete some amazing outfit one day. It won’t! Get rid of it.


    2.  Practice your passion

You might love photography, writing, running or stargazing. But do you actively do it? Actions speak louder than words, and its important for your own health to follow through with what you love. Set aside time for yourself to practice something you enjoy. Set goals, improve, learn. Its easy to forget to do what you like when work becomes your life. Work isn’t everything.


    3. Meditate 

Sometimes people have a skewed outlook on what meditation is. Truth be told, meditation can be whatever you want it to be. You don’t need to meditate for long to benefit from it. Meditate for 5 minutes a day. I like to meditate in the morning before the rush of the day. It helps to clear your mind and prepare. Meditating at the end of the day is also great to unwind and reflect. Take a moment to de-stress, release the anxieties and stresses of the day. Meditation is about clearing the mind, but It’s also about focus. If thinking of nothing doesn’t work for you, think of something that makes you happy. Focus on something to be grateful about.


    4. Experience nature

Its amazing how cooped up we get these days. Our eyes are glued to our devices or our work. It can become hard to appreciate the wider world we live in. Take a walk with no distractions – turn off your phone! Instead of listening to music, listen to the noises around you. Even if you live in a louder part of the world with less nature, make the most of what you have. Find a park, take a walk around the block. If its cold, embrace it! Rug up and enjoy the cold instead of fearing it.


    5. Organise your space

You need space that is your own. It may be a room or it may be a couch. Whatever the space is, keep it clean and organised. Take the time to find a place for everything. The more organised the space around you is, the more organised your thoughts will be. Its impossible to relax amongst mess, you just won’t feel at ease. Invest in folders, storage boxes and other organisation items to clear up your space. Don’t let your are become overrun with things. Things are not important, YOU are important.


I hope these tips help you as much as they have helped me. Remember, change can happen from the smallest of things.
